Biomerics Completes Expansion

Utah-based firm adds 10,000 square feet to its headquarters.

Biomerics LLC, a Salt Lake City, Utah-based supplier to the medical device and healthcare industries, has completed an expansion of its Salt Lake City facility. Biomerics specializes in biomedical materials, compounding, injection molding, extrusion, and medical device fabrication.

The new space will mean more employees for the company.

The 10,000-square-foot addition took place within the company’s existing 75,000-square-foot facility. The new space includedes a clean room for injection molding and device assembly, a medical-device packaging facility and a fulfillment warehouse.

“We are excited about the new capabilities this expansion provides for customers,” said Travis Sessions, president and CEO. “The additional cleanroom enables us to have dedicated production areas for material polymerization and compounding, as well as injection molding and medical device assembly. The new packaging and warehouse space expands our capability to manage sterile medical device fulfillment for our customers”.

In addition to the facility expansion, Biomerics has invested $1.5 million in new plastics manufacturing equipment.

“The operations team has been focused on expanding and developing our manufacturing capabilities to support the growth,” said Jeff Clark, vice president of Operations. “In the past six months, the team has brought online new medical and pharma compounding lines, an automated material handling system, and expanded our capabilities in injection molding, vibration welding, and device assembly”.

The expansion of the ISO 13485 registered facility has resulted in the hiring of 15 employees and is expected to support the creation of an additional 20 positions over the next 12 months. With the additional 15, the company how employes about 65 people.

According to a report in the Salt Lake Tribune, Gary Harter, managing director for business outreach and international trade at the Utah governor’s Office of Economic Development, said companies such as Biomerics play a key role in the state’s growing life sciences industry.

Notable companies in the state include Merit Medical of South Jordan; Edwards Lifesciences, which is headquartered in California, but has a facility in Draper; and international dialysys company Fresenius has an operation in Ogden.

“It is great that we have the companies that actually make the widgets, but having the support companies for those manufacturers out there is also essential,” he told the newspaper, adding that the industry now employs more than  24,000 workers who earn an average annual wage of $56,000 compared to the state’s average annual wage of $38,000.
